Meridian Awarded New Patent for Novel Transport Device

January 15, 2003 at 10:25 AM EST

CINCINNATI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 15, 2003--Meridian Bioscience, Inc., (Nasdaq:VIVO) today announced that it has received from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office the official Notice of Allowance for a patent entitled "Biological Sampling and Storage Container Utilizing a Desiccant". The patent relates to a device for the sampling and storing of specific biological samples used in medical testing. This allowance compliments a patent that was granted earlier (Patent No. 6,299,842) and strengthens Meridian's position with respect to transporting samples under desiccated (dried) conditions.

Lab tests that are performed on samples of body tissue (blood, urine, feces, etc.) have become indispensable tools in aiding doctors in diagnosing illness. Testing procedures that use samples collected by non-invasive procedures, such as urine and feces, have become increasingly critical for providing physicians with accurate results that enable better patient management. These Meridian patents describe a novel device that can be used for easily collecting and storing samples, particularly feces, which need to be maintained in a relatively dry atmosphere. This dry atmosphere stabilizes the biologicals so that testing can occur at a later date. This invention is simple enough to be used at home, allowing the patient to mail the device directly to the lab for further processing and testing.

John A. Kraeutler, President and Chief Operating Officer, said, "Meridian Bioscience has been, and continues to be a leader in specimen transport and processing, and in developing innovative diagnostic technologies for use in evaluating those specimens. These two patents demonstrate Meridian's continued commitment to innovation of easy to use products for its customers."
